Including the one who mixed up lance-leaf coreopsis (a bright yellow daisy, perennial, 18" tall) and cardinal climber (a semi-tropical vine with tiny bright red flowers, which resemble morning glories). That kid works at a garden center, one of the better ones in town.
This is why they can't pay me enough to teach this class.
Well, the ipomoea was on the list for last week, but wasn't one of the plants they had to ID for that quiz. The coreopsis, leaves and flowers, was there in person.
What Donna does for the quizzes is setup one plant per table, 14-20 plants, and the students have to provide botanical name, common name, family, and three facts about culture.
They've mixed up some amazing things. Two weeks ago, she was nasty to them and gave them a pile of aster family things to do. Judging from the test scores, marigolds and calendula and goldenrod and coreopsis are all identical.
