In what universe does goldenrod IN ANY WAY resemble a member of the nightshade family???

Umm... the green parts stick up?

Good thing these folks don't have to survive in the wild...

Yeah, but some of these folks think they're going to get a job in the landscape industry.

Including the one who mixed up lance-leaf coreopsis (a bright yellow daisy, perennial, 18" tall) and cardinal climber (a semi-tropical vine with tiny bright red flowers, which resemble morning glories). That kid works at a garden center, one of the better ones in town.

This is why they can't pay me enough to teach this class.

So, what is it you are teaching next semester again?

NOT THAT.

Landscape design for dummies. Principles of landscape design. Which is a very dumbed-down version of what I had to take in college.

So... like mixed up a coreposis and an ipomoea in person, plant in front of him?

Wow. Good thing they keep the rat poison far away from the Ding-Dongs.

Well, the ipomoea was on the list for last week, but wasn't one of the plants they had to ID for that quiz. The coreopsis, leaves and flowers, was there in person.

What Donna does for the quizzes is setup one plant per table, 14-20 plants, and the students have to provide botanical name, common name, family, and three facts about culture.

They've mixed up some amazing things. Two weeks ago, she was nasty to them and gave them a pile of aster family things to do. Judging from the test scores, marigolds and calendula and goldenrod and coreopsis are all identical.

Well, marigolds and calendulas are confusing to a lot of us, with the whole calendula/tagetes "marigold" issue... but sheez. Goldenrod?
