Busy weekend
Mar. 1st, 2005 01:08 pmI was quite cheerful to not have to go in to work on Sat--being tired and cranky made me even less tolerant of New Boss than usual.
Saturday was fun--we met Albert to walk through some of his salvage jobs, to see if any of the stuff he's getting could be used for the cabins Robyn wants to put on her property. Took a few pictures, drooled over some 6x12" ridgebeams, and agreed to come back on Sunday to help take a wall down, so we could have the (lovely!) rock that was facing it. Then off to Robyn's property, for a picnic lunch and walk-through to lay out cabins. While By & Robyn measured and set stakes, I got to sit on a log, in the sun, and knit on the yellow and green Turkish socks.
Sunday was more work than fun...we met Albert at the job site about 9am, just in time to see him chasing off some guy who was trying to walk off with our rock. Albert wasn't in the mood to mess with him too much, so he just threatened to call the police, and told the guy that he was stealing from a state job (true, it's a highway project), and that the penalties were much higher for that (also true). Anyhow, Albert got rid of him, unlocked the gate, and we went in to legitimately do what the punk couldn't--load up free rock. The truck was groaning when we were done--the ball hitch was only a hand's width off the ground. Rather than rick damage to truck and tires driving like that from Grandview home, Albert let us unload about a third of the rock into a storage unit not too far away.
By had to work yesterday and today--with Albert, getting materials for Robyn's buildings, being paid by Robyn. He was not a happy camper yesterday--it was vey cold up on the roof in the wind, he said. I feel like a slacker, I laid down after lunch to read, and took a 4 hr nap. Got up just in time to put his dinner together, move laundry, and get ready for mead night. (I wore my Very Tall Socks and Betty knitted garter belt to mead night...no cold legs!)
Nearly forgot--Albert said he sold all the Coptic-bound books I'd sent with him last spring, and will sent money home with By sometime this week, and he wants more books to take and sell. Guess they were popular with his Civil War reenactment crowd.
The Temari Report: 6 balls left. We'll see how I feel about it when I'm finished, I may pull three of the earlier ones and replace them. The patterns are ok, but not as showy as the rest. One's a little uneven, one turned out much more subtle than the rest, and the other's just not as nice. Like I said, we'll see.
The Sock Report: with all the driving this weekend, I got lots done on that sock. It's about 9" along now, nearly to the divide for the heel.
The UnSock Report: I finally sucuumbed to peer pressure, and started a Clapotis, using an orangey ombre artisan-dyed wool By's mom gave me a couple years ago. Seems like everyone on all the knitting lists I'm on has either made this, or is about to start. Goofy name, lovely wrap, and a much simpler stitch pattern than I was expecting. (Most of the folks I've seen writing about this pattern complain about how hard it was to keep track of. Sheesh. It's all multiples of 3--how hard it that?) I'm about halfway through the first ball of yarn, and 20-odd inches into it. Mine's narrower than the pattern, because I have no idea how many yards I've got. Anyway, nice, rhythmic, low-effort knitting.

Date: 2005-03-02 01:55 am (UTC)Boucle and dropped sts = bad idea. I keep talking myself out of a fuzzy yarn for this. I know how much trouble it'd be to do the dropped sts, but a nice soft mohair blend, with a good halo.....bad treeskin, no cookie. May try another one, larger, with some Wool-Ease I've got in the stash. Seen pics of a few that people have done out of Wool-Ease, they all looked nice.
