I received a 1946 Philladelphia-mint penny in change this weekend. Been a long time since I got a wheat penny in change; someone must have gotten into their parent's penny jar and spent stuff by accident.

Am 30 squares and a pile of granny-square centers into the estrogen afghan. Out of 169. I may make more and do a larger afghan, or more than one. I've got lots of yarn to use up.

I get to supervise the greenhouse today; Donna's out sick. I have permission to send J'nee home if she wears inappropriate shoes again, or gives me too much lip. I also have permission to give her the nasty jobs she usually balks at doing. And Donna hid the latex gloves (she goes through 5 or more pair an afternoon, because she's so squicked by getting her hands dirty in here), so she'll be extra grumpy about that. **rubs hands** Might be my chance to finally chase the bitch off.

Don't -you- wish your balls were so beautifully decorated? Hmm?

Actually, I have a nice collection of beautifully decorated balls, thank you. They seem to impress the ladies quite well too!

Collection.... as in more than the standard two? That would be impressive even without the beautiful decorations!
:-p

Funny thing, that. Most of the men of my acquaintance are rather squicked by the idea of well-decorated balls.

It's a girls' bonding thing. It's Cammie's idea. A group of us are going to make a pile of 6" granny squares, then trade squares between us, and stitch what we end with into an afghan. The resulting afghans will be very unique, and special because they've got a bit of each of us in it.

Very cool! Any particular yarn(s) you're using, or is the blend part of the eventual uniqueness? I'm assuming this is crochet 'cause I haven't yet seen a knit granny square pattern.

Actually, I've seena couple things close, but yeah, it's mostly crochet. So far. I'm not ruling out the possibility of knitting a few squares further into this process. But I'm trying for speed and quantity completed right now.

I'm just using whatever yarns I've got, plus a couple of ombres I just bought to tone some of the horrid stuff down. (Actually found something that made the 6-oz skein of safety orange Red Heart look decent.)

I had to buy the safety orange for that Tigger afghan I did for my nephew last Xmas. And have LOTS left.

You can use any kind of yarn, we stuck with the basic acrylic stuff last time, because that is what most of us had laying around in large quantities, and one of us (me) has some weird allergy to wool. However, I think using different yarns would just add to it, they come out pretty crazy anyway. I will have John take pictures of mine soon and post them in LJ. We are making 169 6 inch squares.

That sounds like a neat project! I've always loved the 'crazy quilts' that my grandmother's made for us. A crazy afghan, particularly one with pieces made by beloved friends, seems so warm and wonderful, just a nifty idea. I look forward to seeing pics of the finished projects!

Let me just be clear on this, she works in a greenhouse? but, she afraid of getting her hands dirty? WTF, I'm having a bad morning and am in the mood to fire someone, fire her, none of my staff is coming in today :)

(no subject)

Date: 2005-11-08 04:34 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] treeskin.livejournal.com
It's actually worse than that, but you don't want to get me started this morning. I'd love an excuse to fire her, but I was told we had to keep her until she did something incredibly stupid, or quit, because getting rid of her might make it hard for us to get work study people in the future.

The getting her hands dirty thing--she's in pre-nursing, and seems to think that she can't do any work without those damn gloves (including outside stuff like spreading mulch), because that's what they do in a hospital. I hate to tell her this, but there's a lot of things she does now that they won't let her do in a hospital...like run around work with her mid-length hair loose, or that godawful perfume she wears, or.....

My opinions are showing again.

So, are your staff not coming in today because you're cranky, or is that why you're cranky?

My string would say to heck with this, call in sick, and go home for a nap, following by a glorious afternoon of rolling in yarn.

It is normally just Misty and I on tuesdays anyway, she had a bad weekend (personal life) so I told her to take the day off, I did not know at the time the state of affairs in the store. I have never had a jeweler on Tuesdays which makes me crazy.

The jewelers that I have now work Wednesday through Friday, Russ is here on Saturdays, but he does not do bench work unless we are really far behind. Sundays and Mondays are no problem, but by Tuesday I need someone here, I turn down at least 5 watch batteries a day on Tuesdays just because I don't have anyone here to do it, repair work starts coming in on Tuesdays and I don't have anyone here to look at the pieces and help with estimates, I don't know why Mondays are different from Tuesdays, but they are. I think people just don't run errands on Mondays. I am hoping when Byron starts he will keep his Tuesday to Friday schedule. I work alone on Tuesdays a lot so I can't even do simple cleanings while they wait. Tuesdays are my major stress day around here, having a jeweler in the back will fix a lot of the problems.
