Feb. 23rd, 2005 07:00 amIt's already my second morning at work this week, and I am much cranky about that fact. I'd come in yesterday for an intensely silly meeting about the Japanese garden some of the professors think we need on campus. Right now, I'm just holding on to the hope that when they get it designed and bid out, the board will shot it down because of the price tag. My esteemed colleague, the Other Landscape Horticulturist (OLH), has submitted a drawing for one of the sites they're looking at--it's worse than anything the architects could come up with, I think. Waterfalls, one large pond, two smaller ones, three bridges, a covered walkway, and a stream, all not only in the middle of campus, but replacing part of the main pedestrian "highway" through there. **shakes head** And of course, the folks in the meeting were all very impressed with this idea, because they wouldn't have to take care of it.
Only got one real day of weekend, Sunday, hence the crankiness. Spent Monday at the greenhouse then at a meeting for HSA--all good and necessary, but not restful. And I need to do HSA stuff again tonight--I've got the registration database at home, and I'm supposed to pull it out of Access and into Excel, and I'm half afraid I need to reinstall Access on my machine to open the damn thing to start with.
We may be getting a time clock in the shop, for the part-time staff to use. Looks like we've got another kid who's coming in just long enough to fill out his time card with hours he didn't work. (It's someone we've suspected of doing it before, and nearly fired a couple years ago, so it's not a surprise. Annoying, but not a surprise.) I talked to Head Carpenter about it yesterday, since my boss isn't in on Tuesdays, and he apparently took it to his boss. Sometimes I think we should get rid of all our part-time staff, and start over with ones that never heard of Damian the Terrible. New ones would probably just develop a new set of attitude problems, though.
Oh, well. I will get Sat off, since I came in yesterday. That's something, I guess.
By spent the weekend working on stuff for Richard, so I've not seen much of him the past few days. I'll be glad when that project is done; Richard is a high-input, low-return client.
Called Mom last night, for company while By was out doing shop things. She had good news and bad news. First, someone local (and wealthy, for that area) died recently and bequeathed 9% of their estate to the local library. Right now, they're looking at $175K, maybe a bit more after the rest of the land is sold. That's enough to make that library handicap accessible, or build a new building to house it, and that's very cool. (The library is currently housed in the original limestone building that was built with Carnegie funds, and it's lovely, but very much not accessible. Stairs outside, very narrow stairs inside, and no place to run wiring for more computers.) The bad news: Mom and her oldest brother had Grandma's land appraised, and my uncle is going to see Grandma today about selling it, and putting the money away for her maintenance. They've talked about this before, but Grandma's always balked because she didn't want to hurt the feelings of her youngest son (the one who doesn't speak to the family, because they're all poor, and that embarasses him). But they really need to get Grandma out of the house and into an apartment where she won't have to worry about maintenance. One of the sticky points with the plan is Mom and my uncle want to put the money in a trust fund in their names, so that if Grandma needs to go into a nursing home, the government won't take it all. This was done, maliciously, to one of my great-aunts years ago, and her kids kept the money and give her a pittance, and that's created much bitterness and strife in the family. Hopefully, Mom and my uncle can convince Grandma that's not what they intend. *sigh* Family.
The Sock Report: no socking lately. Bad me, no cookie. But what I got done on the green and yellow Turkish sock before I started doing temari looks very nice.
The UnSock Report: I have 12 temari left, to finish the box. 11, when I finish the one I started last night. (Which may be a while, it's a more complex pattern.) I'm starting to run out of ideas for patterns for these, so I'm glad they're almost done.
