Adapted from the "After Bertha" socks by Dinae Ballerino, pulished in Socks Socks Socks, edited by Elaine Rowley. (A very good book, by the way, I highly recommend it.)

These fit my size 8 foot, 11 1/2" ankle.

Gauge 8 1/2 sts per inch, with sock-weight yarn on size 0 needles.

The spiral rib pattern has a repeat of 6 sts, so if you need more or less for fit, increase or decrease in multiples of 6.

Cast on 78 sts, divide evenly over 3 needles, place marker, join, and work 4" in k3, p3 rib, end at marker. Work in spiral rib pat until sock is 1 1/2" less than desired length (you'll make up the rest in the toe). Mine were 12" before the toe, which was 5 repeats of the spiral rib pattern.

Toe
Rnd 1 - 2: K
Rnd 3: (K 4, k 2 tog) around
Rnd 4 - 5: K
Rnd 6: (K 3, k 2 tog) around
Rnd 7 - 8: K
Rnd 9: (K 2, k 2 tog) around
Rnd 10 - 11: K
Rnd 12: (K 1, k 2 tog) around
Rnd 13 - 14: K
Rnd 15: (K 2 tog) around
Rnd 16: K
Cut yarn, leaving 8" tail, run tail through all sts left on needles twice, pull tightly together, and finish off.

Spiral Rib (from Mary Thomas's Knitting Book, published by Dover)
Rnds 1 - 4: (K 3, p 3) around
Rnds 5 - 8: (P 1, k 3, p 2) around
Rnds 9 - 12: (P 2, k 3, p 1) around
Rnds 13 - 16: (P 3, k 3) around
Rnds 17 - 20: (K 1, p 3, k 2) around
Rnds 21 - 24: (K 2, p 3, k 1) around

Tha author suggests for faster working and thicker socks, working these over 48 sts with worsted weight yarn (and I'd guess size 4 or 5 needles). Probably be good boot socks that way.....

In other news, I started a lopi sweater Sat evening, after I finished the prayer shawl for Myrna. That turned out quite nice, thank you for asking. I've got about 12" done on the body of the sweater, and since I'm using a finite qunatity of stash yarn, I'm doing the sleeves now, so that when I work in the next color, the sleeves and body will match.

It's a fast pattern--size 10 needles, a big soft wool singles yarn, and in-the-round construction. I love in-the-round construction; no seams, no back-and-forth purling that slows you down, just round and round and round until it's done.

I still plan to do a lap blanket or something for Myrna's husband, Stan, I just haven't decided on which yarn/pattern. Well, pattern will be determined by the yarn, but anyway....I'd rather use some of the pile Myrna gave me last month, I think that'd be a neat gift: "Here, I'm returning some of your yarn, hope you don't mind that I played with it first...."

ah, shucks

We ought to do the stitch and bitch afternoon more often.

Ooo, random thought. Meg's graduation in Topeka is at 3 next Sunday, and we were thinking of offering to drag you with us. We could make a *quick* stop at Yarn Barn on the way, just to get you some needles......
