The tree care seminar, named "bugs and cooties" by one of the presenters, was very good. More info on sudden oak death this yeaar--nasty stuff, that. They've ID'd the fungus that causes it (it's a Phytopthera, if anyone's interested), it's still isolated in California, and it attacks a lot more things than they initially guessed. Ick.

The last talk was a discussion of tree planting depths, and what the industry needs to change in it's production and planting practices. Informative, but depressing. I now know just how many of the new trees on the tree trail are planted wrong -- all of them! I will be more watchful in future projects.

Finished the body of the first blue-star sock while at the seminar (they gave us handouts, so I didn't need to do notes). It's raining, so I can't do much outside, and I expect I'll start the second sock this afternoon.

Heard from my sister that her husband was let out of the Army, but the fool wants to re-enlist, as long as he can go overseas and play. I do not understand. Haven't heard from Rob on whether/when he's going.

We did get the retaining wall finished Tues afternoon, then we filled the bed with used potting soil from the all the pots that were stacked around the yard. Got everything replanted, too. So far, so good. By's happy, 'cuz now he knows exactly where the edge of the bed is. I'm happy, 'cuz it ought to be easier to take care of. Now I need to decided whre I'm putting the next one.

I pruned today...see my LJ for details. :)

I have decided that I need more spring bulbs. We're going to take a cab over to the shopping center this afternoon for groceries and pet supplies, and while we're there I'm going to dash into Home Depot for pond-plant baskets and (hopefully) some pond-plant soil, if the bags aren't too big. I need to get that silly pond cleaned out, and I can't do that until I have pond-baskets to replant my waterplants into.

We're going to be up in the City Market this weekend (as usual), and I'm going to get some more seeds. Despite my truly wretched luck with growing plants from seed, there's something about spring that makes me very hopeful. One of the features of my yard this year is going to be a peace symbol in blooming flowers, I have decided. My own personal statement.

Glad to hear that your tree seminar went well--sorry to hear about your brother-in-law's idiocy, as always. I'm not surprised the military doesn't want him anymore.

1) May I borrow your peace symbol idea? I rather like that.

2) About Harold--you know how he is. Actually, he was supposed to get out of the reserves last Dec, and he got that letter before Thanksgiving saying he wouldn't. And now, I guess, they're done with him, if he doesn't re-enlist. Amy rather hopes he does, this guessing game has driven her back into therapy (and that, my dear, is not a comment for my mother).

1) The more people who do it, the better. Tell your friends. I'll do a mass email as soon as I break ground on mine!

2) :( I just don't know what to say.

3) I bought some strawberries at Home Depot (and some more mixed lilies!). Do you think it would be possible to build my own little strawberry thingie from bricks, as I have some?

4) I have hot-pink gravel and a submersible filter for the first hex! How exciting is that? :) We'll set it up in a minute or two.

Re #3: Easily. Just stack & fill with dirt. How many strawberries did you get? You'll want to plan ahead and give them room to grow.

10 everbearing--they're supposed to live 2 or 3 years if I mulch. I have quite a few bricks, what with one thing and another. :)

You be interested in a few June-bearers? I need to thin mine a bit. Got 'Surecrop' & two kinds of 'musk' strawberries (some kind of alpine, with bigger berries). The musks are a bit invasive, but oooo, they taste good.

Addict!

Betty Boop is one I've always liked. I don't remember, is that one supposed to be fragrant?

Betty Boop is supposed to be "moderate", which could mean almost anything, I've found. When they say strong or intense, they mean it, and when they say none, they mean it, but "moderate" doesn't seem to be very predictable.

I have my pond soil, but I've gotten sick or something, and I think I ought to keep my hands out of cold water until I'm feeling better. I think it's just allergies that started it, but it's turned into a sinus infection, so I'm trying to be careful. (I know...me, being careful? Never!) Hopefully I'll be feeling better this weekend or next week at the latest, so I can get out there and clean my pond. It's pretty icky. I got some white gravel to go in the bottom, so that I can see what's going on in it. That will be nice. We looked at other ponds at Home Depot last night--they have some nice pre-formed waterfalls this year. I'm wondering if we can somehow incorporate one of those. It would be very nice. :)

With some roses, scent also depends on when in the growing season you're talking about, and soil type, etc. Seems like the strongly scented ones are less variable.
