Having been a responsible adult all morning, even so far as having completed the much-dreaded Dances With Poison Ivy, I now get to reward myself with a trip to my favorite nursery, with Donna in tow, to spend the taxpayer's money. I think a pot of sandalwood-scented bamboo is going to follow us home :)

Phyllostachys atrovaginata, aka incense bamboo. Not the leaves, but the culms (stems) are scented, moderately, of sandalwood. I'm in love.

No kidding. But at $60 WHOLESALE for a 5-gal pot....um...I'll wait until the one we got for school is big enough to divide. Like, next spring or the year after.

Enquiring minds would love to know how long the scent lasts in the wood after it's been cut, for instance, or what it smells like when it's burned....so many possibilities there.
