First, and the most fun: sewn, velcro-on dragon tails. I think my kids need these, 'cuz ...yeah...I didn't get to play with anything that cool as a kid, and if I make them for the kids, I get to play with them too!

There are other cool projects on this gal's blog, take a peek.

Next, from Botany Photo of the Day, earlier this week: corn, displayed next to what experts *guess* is its ultimate ancestor. Which is a really wild comparison. And yes, teosinte really looks like that--D and I grew it once, just because we were curious. (If you're in a climate where teosinte will grow and set before frost, I recommend some next to your corn patch, because pollen from teosinte does seem to help ear set on modern corn varieties.)

A recipe to hold for a cold day: savory mushroom and shallot bread pudding

It was 60 degrees this morning, and I ran the kids all over the yard for hours. Around, and back and forth, then into the front yard, then across the street to visit the neighbor's dogs, which turned into a visit and a run all over their yard, which the dogs through great fun. And that led to my neighbor and I carrying up first a slide that was supposed to come with the swing set they gave us, then a child-sized porch swing with a canopy. (Or, a frame for a canopy, but a tablecloth tied on will do fine for shade this summer.) Their daughter is outgrowing things right and left--she put on 3" and 12 lb between mid-August and the end of September, and another 2" since Thanksgiving. And of course, my neighbor figured this out *after* she'd knit most of a sweater for her kid. She's re-knitting a lot of the sweater.

I have cleaned out three more flower beds today--yay! I found seedlings in one bed, that I'm not sure of--they're either cinnamon yam (Dioscorea spp, but I can't remember which species), or seedlings of the virgin's bower clematis that's already in that bed. I'll have to move them when it's warmer, no matter what they turn out to be.

By found a very local source for the part we need for the big tiller, and it's affordable, so cross your fingers and wish us luck on machine repairs. He's hoping to have it running and tilling the big garden by the end of the weekend.

Heard from Sis recently. Her ex is still threatening to take the boys away, but not actually doing anything. I really don't think he's going to, but he's sure got her worked up about it.

The kids do not seem to have noticed Baggins passing, which is just as well. I warned the neighbor, so she could break the news to her daughter (who freaked the last time she noticed that one of our fish had died). I'm still going into the bedroom and thinking I see a ball of grey and white sleeping on the bed, before I shake myself and remember.
