Project updates
Nov. 13th, 2010 03:18 pmI knew it had been a while since I spent any large amount of time trolling the internet for tatting stuff, but I was shocked to find one of the best authors and websites vanished. Dianna Stevens, of domesticarts.com , no longer seems to have an online presence. I haven't found anything to tell me if something's happened to her, or what. **frowns**
This search was prompted by a hunt through the tatting websites I could remember, looking for a decent-but-not-too-complicated tatted cross to make for my grandmother for Yule, since my mom is giving Grandma a new, large-print Bible. Found that the online tatting community is much more active than when I was part of it, and that i leans two ways: silly, almost cartoony motifs that interest me not at all, and very complicated, study-for-weeks-to-get-it-right techniques and are showy, but way more effort than I've got time for.
Got the four dolls from the other day assembled and awaiting clothes. Spent all morning yesterday (and I do mean *all* morning) trying to turn the parts for a half-sized doll (about 3" tall) right-side out and get them stuffed, then got the parts for a full-sized one done. Am in the process of getting those two dolls gesso'd now--hands, feet, and head for the mini doll, and whole thing on the full-sized one since the dye went onto the muslin splotchy. They're both due for a final coat in a few minutes, and I hope to get the skin tones on them by this evening, and spend the no-children part of the night doing dresses.
I **think** I've figured out how to dress the mini doll...just have to dig through my box of lace and trims and see if I've got some lace that's wide enough to gather into a little skirt, and sew on a band of ribbon for a bodice.
One of my favorite doll-making blogs posted a tutorial for a really cute and easy doll's bed out of purchased, turned wood parts and a plain wooden picture frame. I am firmly resisting the urge to make a couple, until I've got more of my Yule-gift projects done.
Edited to add: from a comment made in passing on another tatting blog, Ms Steven's page has been gone since at least Jan 2009. Hmmmm.
