Nine weeks to the plant sale, as of tomorrow, so 11 weeks to Heartland. Gak. But, spring break is the week after next. That's a thing to look forward to.

Between seeding and greenhouse stuff and class stuff and the grading that I'm putting off, I'm not going to have much time to update in the next few weeks. I'll try, but.... *shrug*

Dr G went and did something stupid yesterday. He signed us up to represent the college at some 8th-grade career fair the week before the plant sale. (We'll leave alone discussions of whether or nto it's actually something useful for the average 8th-grade student.) And, he signed us up for a tour, for the Lenexa Chamber of Commerce, the DAY BEFORE the second day fo the plant sale. Oh, goody. Bastard. Any nursery owners in that are going to be going through here like a hawk, trying to catch us selling things we illegally propagated.

Noticed this morning that the gas station where I filled up last night went from $2.149/gal at 6 last night, to $2.269/gal this morning. WTF?

Another entry for WTF: saw this large truckish thing on Lackman Rd last night, looked like someone had stuck a pickup bed on a spiffy new semi. Jacked up and chromed up and tinted windows and all. Huge. Aboslutely huge. Figured it was some kind of special commercial rig, although it didn't have a logo on it that I could see. Was telling By about it last night, and he said it was one of the new diesel pickup trucks. !!!!! Now tell me, what kind of my-penis-is-too-small complex do you have to have, that you need to be driving one of these things? Yeah, it was pretty, but the dang thing CAN'T be useful...gotta have a ladder to get in, and I can't imagine trying to get things into and out of the bed, with it that high. Damn, people. Thing had to have cost as much as my mortgage, and I'm sure it cost more than my monthly mortgage payments to keep it fueled.

I don't understand.

What else have I neglected to update on in the past few days?

Latest news from Sis. Caution: bad for your blood pressure. )

I've not been paying much attention to the news lately, but I stumbled across this post on Molly Saves The Day, and have been following it since. Yes, it's the same thing I linked to Monday morning. If you read it then, make time to go back and read the comments....it's an interesting cross-section of views and opinions on the matter.

And while we're on that subject, our neighoring state of Missouri has decided join the pro-birth bandwagon. Heard the story on NPR this morning, that some elected official (and I didn't catch that part of the story) had declared that it was time to shut Roe v Wade down, state by state if they had to, and that they planned to introduce legislation to ban all abortions in the state except those necessary to prevent the death of the mother.

I'm still looking for an article on this, I'd like more documentation. If anyone sees anything, pass it on.

Gods above and below. All aboard the every-sperm-is-sacred bandwagon. Next stop, Republic of Gilead.

Whew

Finally got a chance to sit down. Had the Russian Volunteer in this morning, and that little gal can work. Damn. She worked through a BIG pile of repotting, went through at least one bale of potting soil by herself, and kept Donna and I scurrying to keep up with her for 3 hours. Impressive, for a 4'6" white-haired whirilwind.

Bri got the aquarium set up in the back house, to start the Victoria water lilies in--or will start them, as soon as the water gets up to temp. It's very picky stuff...the seed will die if it dries out, it won't germinate if the water's under 85 degrees, fertilizer only at certain stages. But it'll be soooo cool to have one in here.

Ah, that's right, most of you don't know what these are. Here is a closeup of them, at the Missouri Botanical Garden. This shot shows the thorns on the underside of the leaves (keeps critters from grazing). In flower. None of these shots show the size of the thing....the "care and feeding" sheet Bri got with the seeds says to give each plant at least 100 square feet.

Wait, found one that shows the size. Your standard publicity shot of these, no date on the photo. The trick to the shots of people standing on the leaves of these is that they often put boards under the leaves, or carefully inside them, to distribute the weight.

I think I need to get a thumb drive for moving data between my work and home computers, and from my decktop to the computer in the classroom. Taking stuff home, or between buildings, on cd's is starting to get silly.

I would welcome recommendations of type/brand/etc.
