Tao Te Ching: Chapter 28
translated by Ursula K. Le Guin

Knowing man
and staying woman,
be the riverbed of the world.
Being the world's riverbed
of eternal unfailing power
is to go back again to be newborn.

Knowing light
and staying dark,
be a pattern to the world.
Being the world's pattern
of eternal unerring power
is to go back again to boundlessness.

Knowing glory
and staying modest,
be the valley of the world.
Being the world's valley
of eternal inexhaustible power
is to go back again to the natural.

Natural wood is cut up
and made into useful things.
Wise souls are used
to make into leaders.
Just so, a great carving
is done without cutting.

(Found on Women's Early Art, which has lots of Asian poetry, as well as African-American quilts and stories. Eclectic and cool site.)

And since I'm in a mood for silliness, and have haiku on the brain all week, I offer this entry of penis haiku from [livejournal.com profile] haikusoup. Unfortunately, there hasn't been anything this clever posted on the community for a long time.

Two dead birds on the sidewalk this morning....makes 3 this week. And the custodians are too squicked to pick them up, so grounds gets to do it.

It's been a nice slow week at work, which lets me ease into the whole cold-turning-into-winter thing. I've worn longjohns (bottoms, anyway) all week. The air's not that cold, but the ground is, and I've been doing end-of-season planting and weed-pulling, and that means kneeling on COLD ground.

By started designing a project for the annual show last night...a leather and metal basket to carry wine in. What was done before I went to bed last night was impressive.

I went to rehearsal this week....it went better, but Carol and Bob were both absent. We spent much of the time sorting music and figuring out what we're going to play for the holiday season. Yup, Xmas muzak already. The two new renaissance pieces are cool, but I had my fill of Frosty and Rudolph last year.

"You just don't do it on Sunday," said Sandra Hulsey of Greenville, Georgia. "That's Christ's day. You go to church on Sunday, you don't go out and celebrate the devil. That'll confuse a child."
So, what you're saying is it's okay to "celebrate the devil" on any day besides Sunday? *shakes head* I wish this kind of thing was a joke, but it's not.
