A pause, to catch my breath
Mar. 9th, 2004 04:48 pmA restful and creative weekend, just shot to hell by a phone call...once I got my mother to calm down enough to speak coherently, and I gather she was more together than my sister had been, Mom kept using the word "hysterical"....
Anyway.
The first of the tests says my sister's baby might have Down's Syndrome, and possibly something else wrong, but Mom was too upset to remember exactly. Might. It's still a "might", right now. She'll be going in for more tests, Mom didn't know how soon she'd get more answers. So, if you can spare some time and energy, think healthy thoughts in my sister's direction.
I tried to calm Mom down by asking her about Grandma & and her eye surgery (which was Friday)....that didn't help. It went well, she seems to be healing ok, but they're not sure how much vision she'll regain in that eye, once things heal. Right now, she can see light and dark, and that's it on that side. Mom said Grandma's getting depressed (and who can blame her?), and was talking about not being able to quilt anymore.
Mom & Grandma did sit down and talk this weekend about Grandma either moving in with Mom, or moving into the assisted living facility nearby. Right now, Grandma's holding out to stay near her younger sister, who's not doing well. She, and the family are all so used to Grandma being the nurse, the caretaker for the family, no one but Mom & my sister & me seem to realize that Grandma's nearly 79, and needs a caretaker herself now. And she's the oldest of her surviving siblings...she raised mos of her younger brothers and sisters, and is generally in better health than they are....not much I can do there, but be supportive of my mom, who gets to deal with all this more directly than I do.
