knitting ramblings, the Sock and UnSock Reports )

Had to Rescue A Kitten yesterday afternoon. I realized I was missing one around 5pm, about the same time I started hearing plaintive mews from the back of the house. Three cabinets later, I found Faulks in the closet in the back bathroom, where hemust have been since I went in there looking for something before lunch (12:30 or so). He was VERY happy to see me.

Decided to try out my new fingernail polish last night. It's quite odd, seeing bright red nails beyond the cuffs of my work sweatshirt. Be a good trial run for the stuff though, if it'll last through a day at work, it ought to hold upthrough the annual show no problem.

Annual show countdown: 15 days

Trying to be quiet, because By had a long cold day at work (well, we both did, but I was dressed for it), and he's now asleep in his chair, still fully dressed, under a blanket and a warm cat.

It never got over 40 degrees today. Courtney and I spent the day wrestling annuals out of beds, before tonight's frost turns them to harder-to-handle goo. Yech. Three truckloads of sweet potato vines and tubers, canna stems (we saved the roots for next year), and crunchy but still flowering purslanes.

Looks like I don't have to work at the annual show this year, I can be a tourist and enjoy it. Cool. By says the book-keeper is going to play cash register this time. It'll be weird, being there and not being responsible for anything.

I took the nail polish off after work--it looked decent until after work, when I nicked a couple of nails, and then it started flaking. But that's not bad, considering how much digging I did today. Toes are still polished, and still look good.

The Sock Report: the modular blue sock got ripped out during lunch and restarted, because I'd loosened up during the knitting and had about 1 1/2" too much fabric around the ankle. Bad me. So, the cuff is done, again, and I've started on the first section of the leg. Again. But with fewer stitches this time, so it ought to take less time to finish this section.

The UnSock Report: hands hurt too much to work on the Lopi sweater tonight. Too much time in the cold today to handle something that bulky.

So I'm sitting in the office for the last hour of the work day, knitting a sock and warming up. D, one of my coworkers (one of the ones who's still not learned to ask too many questions), says:

"Whatcha knitting" they recognize knitting now, versus crocheting, that's a good start

me: "a sock"

D: "you know, they sell those at the store now, already made"

me: "I know. They sell hamburgers at McDonald's, too, but I'd still rather cook for myself."

There was silence.

Don't think he got it.
