The sock report
Feb. 19th, 2003 06:53 amFinished By's blue celtic socks Monday. Finally. It'll be a while before he gets another pair of socks with that complex a pattern, in that fine a gauge (9 sts/inch). He's got big feet. Need to find another pattern to work those from, too. I don't like the way the toe shaping worked when I scaled it up to 96 sts around the foot. Looks okay on, but they look very strange just laying on the bed.
Started a pair of fine-gauge socks for myself yesterday. Blaumberg Special sock wool, red and white, as accents on a dark grey alpaca By's mom gave me for Xmas. Took FOREVER to get the gauge settled down on those. Something about the aplaca, I think. It looks thin, but it's kinda hairy, like a mohair, so it knits up larger than I thought it would. I ended up ripping out and starting over 5 times before I got the gauge I was looking for. By's amused by the fact that, on my Turkish socks, I'm using size 2 needles (2.75mm) and getting 9 sts/inch, and on this, I'm using size 0 needles (2.00mm, they're long smooth toothpicks), and getting 8 sts/inch.
Brought the new set of Turkish socks with me to work. Will try to do a little during breakfast and lunch.
And, since I ended up using size 0 for my fine-gauge socks, I still have a set of #2's open for another project. Probably be a set of Turkish socks, probably for Robyn. Got them designed while I was letting my hands rest Monday. Ought to do a pair for By, but I'd like to do a nice surprise for Robyn, and she's got small feet; they won't take too long.
Weather's decent today, I may actually have to work. Got a pile of small trees (seedlings we planted two years ago, none over 4' tall) that will need moved before they start on the new parking garage.
