WTF, and the weekend in review
Sep. 15th, 2004 06:43 amIn the WTF category--it's the "big day"...we're (rain permitting) landscaping the front of the Student Center this morning, with the volunteer help of some of the staff. (Oh, joy.) But, half of the full-time staff aren't here today, and I expect the PT staff will be hiding from the boss so they dont' have to participate. No idea where Turf Guy and The Other Dave are...The Other Dave is usually late, but Turf Guy isn't....wonder if he's that pissed off already.
And I forgot my work keys and pager. By was kind enough to find them for me and agree to deliver them on his way to work for John.
By's been working for John part of the day, and for Robyn the rest this week; Robyn gets him all day tomorrow and Friday. Not sure about the weekend yet.
Sunday's concert went well. We only had to stop and start over once, and that was because Bob had the wrong music up. The vocalist/keyboard duo ahead of us stopped several times, because his music kept blowing off the stand. Note to self: put clothespins in music basket for RenFest. The Ice Cream Social was worth attending, if only for the neato-keen antique cars and antique fire engine (very very cool) on proud display. The homemade ice cream wasn't bad, either.
Donna and I went to the Hort Farm in DeSoto Monday, toloot and pillage get cuttings and starts of the things that really impressed us. We left there with bunches of hardy hibiscus seeds, and a big bag of lantana and angelonia cuttings, and that ruellia that impressed me so much in July, and a start of the "supermint" (A Satureja hybrid, I later found out), and that wonder euphorb. And grasses..."ruby" grass and "Wind Dancer" (haven't found botanical names yet for either, but they're fine and fancy things). Ahhh, free plants. And I have rose cuttings I need to take to the greenhouse and stick sometime today. Frank snipped them at a friend's house in Topeka yesterday, while he was waiting on the garage to finish his car.
The Sock Report: I started another sock pattern in the orange alpaca, and this one I actually think I'll like. It's a top-down style with a nifty texture pattern and an eye-of-partridge heel, and I'm onto the gusset decreases on the first sock. It's with me at work today, since I couldn't find my "purse socks" this morning. (They were with my keys and pager, in the bag I was knitting out of in the water truck Saturday.)
The UnSock Report: I've been neglecting other projects this weekend in favor of the Orenburg-style scarf I designed. (My current excuse is my hands needed the softening from the lanolin in that yarn.) It's now 18" long unstretched (and about that wide). Still can't work on it without the charts. I think if I were doing either of the charted patterns by themselves, it'd be easier to memorize, but memorizing two 12-row repeats is a bit much for my fuzzy brain.
I need to put it down and finish the crocheted rug that's mostly done on the coffee table, and spend some more quality time with the Tigger afghan, since Sis wanted that "sometime in October".

Date: 2004-09-15 05:35 am (UTC)Clothespins work and have a long and respectable tradition for outdoor music retention. Other options I've seen/used - a clear sheet of plexi or other clear plastic, appropriately sized (but this can be too heavy for some collapsable stands); a loop of black elastic cord large enough to encompass music & stand; some spiffy purpose made clothespinny type things that have ruler sized strips of clear plastic that extend across the music while letting you see through; putting the music in sheet protectors in a three-ring binder (usually coupled with clothespins, but the sheet protector gives the paper a bit more body so the unpinned bits don't wiggle or flap as much); or my personal favorite - helpful bystanders, and if they're cute, its a bonus!

I had my music in no-glare sheet protectors in a 3-ring binder; some of the recorder group aren't that organized.
The keyboard player before us used the plexiglass trick. I hadn't seen that, and thought it was clever. The singer he played for, however, just held his music in a folder, like some sort of choir performance.
