Drove to the farm in Neosho on Sunday, to see how much damage was done by the strom a couple of weeks back, and make a general report for By's folks on the condition of the place. Three of the big oaks we were married under are on the ground now; the guy that rents the pasture is working on cleaning them up for firewood/timber. Half of the old chicken coop, just into the pasure, was smashed, but the rest is ok, and an old, old black walnut JUST missed the house. I think the folks are trying to decide what to do with the property--it needs more than occasional maintenance, and none of the family are close enough to do that. We've talked about moving down there once or twice, and By's uncle and his wife have too, but there's always the "no jobs nearby" to stumble over. While the guys (By & his uncle) were looking at the sheds, Patty & I dug up mimosa and maple seedlings. Eeek. Need to get those out of the bucket and into the ground today. Oops.

Even fore-warned, we were amazed at the number of ticks out there. Allan and Patty both changed clothes completely before leaving, and still ended up pulling ticks off before they got into the truck. We were using the 23% Deet bug spray from work, and still finding them on us, even when we got home. *shakes head* That'd be a definte problem for By if he were to go down and work on fixing things.

Got caught in road construction on the way home. Blech. By decided to get off the road (since we were coming into the city about 6pm) and wait out traffic, so we stopped at Barnes and Noble and walked around a bit. Too much temptation. Made it out of there under $10 (only 2 books, both off the bargain table).

Cleaned house yesterday morning, and F spent his day off visiting and talking yesterday afternoon/evening/night (he left at 3am). Was a good time. He's going to be homeless come August, because of issues with the current roommates. We made the offer, half in jest, "if all you want's a room, you willing to mow the yard for it?" He's willing to mow, and help By build sheds, so this might work. We shall see, and start cleaning out the junk room, because it needs doing regardless.

Terry's not gotten back to By about when the work he needed By for was supposed to start, so By's finishing some stuff for Robyn today. Probably a good thing he's inside and sitting down today, because By was up until 1 am talking, too.

The Sock Report: Am halfway up the foot on my current "purse project". That's decent progress. Piled the three pair of socks from my "finished" pile into my bag for the road trip, and got all the ends woven in, and I got them all washed and blocked yesterday.

The UnSock Report: Saturday evening, I finished the shawl in the wool singles yarn; I hope to get it blocked today. I also took my U Can 2 shell in the car, and got all the edging ends grafted togeher, and all the dangly ends-of-skeins ends woven in. Got that washed and blocked yesterday too. Got the knitted pansy sewn together and onto the chenille hat yesterday afternoon, so that's wearable for this weekend.

My reward for getting the all that stuff tended was a new lace project. I know, I'm not finished with the first one, but I got this idea.....Saw a scarf someone had done, Orenburg-shawl style, where you do the first edging, miter the corners on either end, then pick up stitches and knit the middle and both sides together, then miter the last two corners and knit the top edging across. I thought I could do that, so most of the way to the farm was poor By listening to the music, and to me muttering and counting under my breath. I'm using an Irish Lace edging and Pheasant's Eye Lace from Weldon's Practical Needlework, vol 5 (which is a reprint of some patterns published around 1893, in Britain). The edging is meant to be worked after you've done the body of the shawl, and then sewn on and gathered around th corners. Blech. I managed to make the edging turn a corner--took 6 pattern repeats to do it, since the edging is 20 sts wide and only 12 rows deep. And got it charted for posterity. Anyway, after puttering with it yesterday while F was here, the proto-scarf (or stole maybe, it's pretty wide pre-blocking) has a finished short end, two corners done, and the first three rows of the lace done.

Did three rows on the lily of the valley shawl last night. Not bad, for picking it up at 11pm. And I crocheted three little dice bag-sized things for F, who needed some new ones to carry rocks and such in.
