It's that time of year again. In six weeks, on May 5, the JCCC greenhouse will be hosting its annual plant sale. Flowers, herbs (mostly culinary, some medicinal), 30 or more kinds of tomatoes, 20 or so kinds of peppers, a few eggplants, houseplants, tropicals, some water plants, plus whatever else we get ready by then.

We're open from 9-4, Friday only, and again the next Friday (the 12th) to get rid of the leftovers. Cash and checks accepted.

Proceeds go to scholarhsips for the science department, with a little going back into our budget for seeds and stuff for next year.


The sale will be held at the Hort Science Center, on the west side of campus. Easiest way to get there is to take the second (west-most) entrance to campus off College Blvd, the one by the track, and it's the third building on the left, right behind the old red barn and the Regional Police Academy. There's plenty of parking in back.

We've got several to choose from, so what size do you want?

Prices undetermined yet, likely under $25.

Care = good light, some filtering from strong afternoon sun, water when the top 1" of soil is dry, try to avoid changes in humidity. (That's why they drop their leaves when you move them...they get adjusted to where they are, and then you move them, and they shed. ANd then finally put out new leaves, adjusted to the new environment.)

Five feet or taller, if you have any. Does it need humidity, becasue the apartment's very dry in winter and with the humidity level in summer...

May not have one quite that big, but close.

They prefer humidity, but that's easy to achieve. Put a saucer full of gravel under the plant, one that sticks out 6" beyond the diameter of the pot. You want about 1 1/2" of gravel in it, and aquarium gravel or whatever else you have will work. Put your plant on top of this. Now add water to the gravel, to just above the depth of the gravel. Instant, locallized humidity!

If you don't need it in the summer, just don't fill it.

Works for African violets, ought to work for this.

I'll come early and get the tallest one you have. Creating humidity sounds easy.

I'll have to put it in the car on it's side to get it home, will that piss it off too much?

It'll drop some, but not bad. Maybe a third of the leaves, mostly the interior ones, shouldn't drop more than that.
