The Gospel Of Yarn (projects finished in a weekend's knitting)

1. In the Beginning, there was Yarn of many kinds and colors, untouched and full of potential.

2. Yarn being the Source of Ultimate Temptation, the Yarns spoke to the Knitter:

3. The stripey sock Yarn said, "Knit me, for duty. Knit me, for you promised socks for the LongSuffering Husband, who enables the knitting. Knit me, and banish the guilt of an unfinished project."

4. And the Knitter heeded the call, and knitted the stripey sock Yarn into long-legged socks for the LongSuffering Husband, and saw that the project was finished, and Life Was Good.

5. The smooth shiny cotton Yarn said, "Knit me for indulgence. Knit me, for you promised yourself a new summer top. Knit me, and have something new and fun to wear to the party."

6. And the Knitter heeded the call, and knitted the smooth shiny cotton Yarn into a summer tank top, and saw that the project was finished, and Life Was Good.

7. The wool lace Yarn said, "Knit me for joy. Knit me because you simply can't resist the lure of complex lace patterns. Knit me, and marvel at your own skill."

8. And the Knitter heeded the call, and picked up the wool lace Yarn, and was halfway across the row when the power failed. And the Knitter struggled mightily to finish the row, but the Yarn was fine, and the needles narrow, and too hard to see in the dark. And the Knitter said, "There will be light--and joy--tomorrow."

9. LongSuffering Husband, observing the struggle, provided many candles for light, and held a flashlight while the Knitter stroked one Yarn after another, and finally heeded the call of a heavy chenille Yarn who said, "Knit me in the dark, for my stitches are large, and can be read with the fingers. Knit me, for you wished a funky hat for the party."

10. And the Knitter heeded the call, and the heavy chenille Yarn became a funky hat adorned with knitted leaves and flowers, and the Knitter saw that it was finished, and Life Was Good.

11. Barely heard, from a box in the living room, the laceweight wool single-ply Yarn said, "Knit me for creativity. Knit me, because you started my pattern months ago, and abandoned me in a box. Knit me, and rediscover your own creative style."

12. And, again the Knitter heeded the call, knitting the laceweight wool single-ply Yarn feverishly, hoping to see that it is finished soon, because the Knitter hears other Yarns calling.

And he read, and he laughed, and he said, "Damn, that was good." And then he marvelled, thinking, "Wow, that's a lot of knitting."

It is indeed a lot of knitting. One might even call it a sinful amount of knitting, were one to believe that sin applied to something as divine as knitting.

I must admit, however, that the socks were only 1 1/2" of ribbing away from done when I started on them this weekend, the tank top was about 2/3 done, and the chenille hat was done on #10 needles. And I didn't do much besides knit yesterday. I now have a large heap of things that are done, except for weaving in ends, because I just can't focus on that part of the process right now. I'll do that evenings after work, when I'm tired and need something small and fiddly to do.

Oh my,
I have the same delemiahs, I have many colour of yarn calling me again anf again.
but first that pot holder, knitting bag, baby blanket and little bunny in florescent pink that my son craves.

Oh knitter of wisdom is there a way to silence the calls of such yarn?

If you find it, let me know. Best I've done so far is to overpower the call of untouched Yarn with an intense obsession in a particular project, and once that's done, the call of the Yarn is that much worse.
