Jun. 16th, 2004 07:00 amHad a couple of relaxing days. Monday, we spent shuttling to and from the vet; the kittens got their shots and got snipped. Tuesday, we puttered and read books and fixed dinner for lovely people, who kept us up to the wee hours talking. I need to call Mom tonight, and wish her a happy (late) birthday, and reassure her that we weren't in the storms that passed through recently.
The Sock Report: Finished the first sock for By on Monday. The yarn for the second one is in my purse, a hedge against the rain forecast for this afternoon. Could have made it a bit taller I suppose, but he seems happy with it as is. Two inches more, and it would be a knee-high sock, which is a lot of sock, for his long legs.
I emailed the owner of a website selling books of Aran-patterned and argyle kilt hose the other day. Alas, both books are currently unavailable, and she doesn't know when she'll have more from the new printer. Guess I will have to pull out the few patterns I do have, and see what I can do myself by way of cabling. I doubt I'll anything fancy for By to wear by Festival of Tara, but I can try.
The UnSock Report, part 1: Declared the rectangular rug finished yesterday afternoon. It's not as wide as I wanted (a bit over 30"), but it was just getting too heavy and uncomfortable to work on. Picked up and resumed work on the round rug, which is now a 20-pointed sun disk, in shades of yellow and orange. And ruffled slightly. Not sure whether to frog out what I did last night, and redo that shaping so it lays flat, or leave it as is and call it a design feature.
The UnSock Report, part 2: Didn't get much more done on The Sweater since Sunday, but that's ok. The sleeves go so much faster than the body of the sweater that I don't mind. (And I'm procrastinating starting the corrugated rib for the other cuff. Gak.)
The UnSock Report, projects in mind: Turns out I have two versions of that lily-of-the-valley lace shawl, the one in Spinoff, and the one in the most recent Knitter's. The Spinoff version is more versatile, written for different sizes of shawl, and weights of yarn. The Knitter's version is constructed like a Russian Orenburg shawl....do one sides' worth of edging, pick up stitches, then knit the body of the shawl and the adjacent bits of edging at the same time. And it's done in hair-fine mohair. Maybe later. The new silk yarn is an adequate weight for the Spinoff version, but that pattern says not to use 100% silk, because it's not resilient enough to hold the pattern. Mrph. I'm going to swatch in silk anyway, just because....there are fairly open lace shawls in 100% silk in some of my other books, and I think if I use a less "lacy" gauge of needle (one closer to the "right" gauge for that yarn), the fabric ought to have enough body to work. *crosses fingers*
