Thursday was opening day at Heartland, and a zoo. Doubly a zoo: some 900 people arriving, trying to park, trying to find campsites, and camp received 3.5” of rain Wed night, so it was freshly mucky. By & Fred made another run for more peat and pine shavings.
Dinner Thursday night was the potluck/meet-and-greet night at our camp; I think we fed 50 people. Karen has the exact count, but I forgot to ask. Lots and lots of folks.
And Pet arrived Thursday evening, so I got to spend a couple of hours chatting and catching up, and a pleasant hour in our tent enjoying ourselves. Woo-hoo. He’s been more or less living with his brother for the past two months, since his truck hasn’t worked, and his mechanic has been unreliable (dealing with relatives sucks sometimes). He’s still working long hours, still working nights at the ammunition plant. And he’s thinking of cutting off his ponytail and shaving his head, since his hairline has receded at least 2” in the past year. *sigh* That was the only night I got to spend with him, other than hugs and catch-you-later here and there through the festival, between the storms and both being busy. Oh, and the other older married woman he plays with from time to time wants to meet me, which is spooking him, and amuses me greatly. We tried to get together at the festival, but the storms prevented it. I told Pet to give her my number and have her call me. We’ll see if he’s brave enough to do that.
Friday was the first showy fire, which had By & Ashe hard at work plotting flashy additions to the wood pile.
It was also the goat roast--we'd bought a 33-lb goat, cut it into pieces to make it easier to handle, rubbed the whole mess with spices, then wrapped it with foil and buried it in the coals for the afternoon. We also fixed pasta with pesto, a pasta salad, veggie salad, humus and dips and pitas. The medical crew joined us, and brought wonderful tuna, and shrimp, and one of the Nebraska folks brought hand-made truffles.
I must remember to get pictures from Chuck of John (one of the newer NE people) doing unmentionable things to the rump of the goat, before we rubbed it with spices. Just his hands, thank you very much, we were going to eat that, but still....
