Yes, as a matter of fact, I am goofing off during my lunch hour. Glad you noticed.

Found this on Metafilter, and was amused:
Thomas Morton, Pagan Pilgrim of Merrymount. This actually happened, folks. Wonder how things may have been different, had his colony succeeded.

Ah, yes, further proof that being an intelligent, humanitarian, decent, life-positive person will get you the shaft every time.

I still love the irony of Puritans being presented as heroes in this country; poor, benighted and unjustly persecuted, they fled to live in peace, benevolence and Godliness in the New World? Right?

Sure, you can look at it that way, if you discount the Cromwell regime, which showed us just what can be expected when Puritans (fundie Xtians) get any power whatsoever.

Does anyone really expect us to give thanks for the fact that soon after the Pilgrim Fathers regained their strength, they set out to dispossess and exterminate the very Indians who had fed them that first winter?

Are we to express our gratitude for the colonists' 1637 massacre of the Pequots at Mystic, Conn., or their rhetoric justifying the butchery by comparing Indians to "rats and mice and swarms of lice"?

Ward Churchill (http://www.progressive.org/pmpdvwc0.htm) provides many fine examples of Cromwellian action in the New World.
