We'd done our weekend running last night, in case the weather got as bad as the forecasters had been predicting. While in Hobby Lobby in Lawrence, a group of people stopped me, complimented my cape (the Japanese kimono coat I wear), and wanted to know if By and I were reenactors of some sort. I smiled, said yes, we used to be SCA, and what gave it away? One of the gentlemen in the group ticked off, in this order, the way we carried ourselves, our hair length, and By's facial hair. Oh, and then, lastly, the coats.

I'm still trying to figure out what they meant by "the way you carry yourselves".

Thoughts?

I've noticed that re-enactors tend to have a bit of a gait to them, I think it comes from wearing period clothing for extened lengths of time. Modern clothing moves differntly, one has to adjust their walking stance to suit the clothes.
People used to wearing a Kimono (esp women) tend to shuffle their feet.
I know the ones around here don't look natural unless they have broad sword straped to their backs.

By suggested it was just that "you know how to handle the amount of fabric in that coat".

I was half afraid [livejournal.com profile] classics_cat would repeat a comment she made to me years ago, when we'd all gone to a large chain bookstore in SCA garb. I was in a blieaut, veil, and wimple at the time....she told me I looked like a "small galleon under full sail". Mrph.
