This is how you know you're an addict
Oct. 25th, 2005 05:33 pm7:30 am: Grrrr. I’d come in to work very early today, because I was ready to leave early, and figured I’d just be late if I stayed at home another 20 minutes, and anyway, I could eat breakfast and have tea at my desk, with a nice fast internet connection. So much for thinking. No internet. Grrrr. Must type this in Word. Grrrr.
Had a pleasant weekend, very relaxing. Worked hard on Sat, taking last minute cuttings and getting things ready for the upcoming frost, headed home in the rain, fixed Star’s potato soup for dinner, and settled in for a quiet evening with Tristan. Watched Escanaba By Moonlight, which was very funny, ended up staying up until 2am, but it was for a good reason. Spent an equally quiet Sunday watching Harry Potter and knitting and snuggling. Stayed up until 2am again on Sunday night (happy hobbit!). I’d meant to be all kinds of productive yesterday afternoon, but I succumbed to the living room full of sleeping cats, and napped on the sofa for 4 hours.
By worked too much this weekend, but the folks who rented the building were very pleased. (Robyn may undo that though—she’d said something about asking the renters to pay for his time, since he put in 13.5 hrs on Sat. Bad idea, Robyn.) He got there fairly early in the morning, took a couple hours off, and spent the rest of the day babysitting the wedding and reception. Guess he didn’t leave the building until after 2am (so say the people who tucked him in that night). I’m glad he had someplace closer than home to go crash after that work day; I’d been worried about that. And J and C let him sleep until noon on Sunday, which I’m sure he needed.
Edit, 8:28 am: Still no internet. Grrrr.
Edit #2, 8:38 am: Just got an announcement via campus email, saying that there is no connection to the internet right now. No shit, Sherlock. We figured that out an hour ago. Grrrr.
And, there’s going to be a big crowd of people all over the building today. Lovely. Just lovely. The headhouse is already full of large tropicals that were brought in last night to avoid the frost, and I don’t know if we need to do something to them before they go into the greenhouse, since Donna’s not here to ask, and DG doesn’t know anything about that.
Edit #3, 9:11 am: Still no internet. Am thinking that being deprived of that much of my morning ritual is justification for going postal.
Edit #4, 9:28 am: Still no internet. Will have tea instead.
Edit #5, 9:54 am: Still no internet. Tea isn’t helping. May have to drown my disappointment in a key lime Coke.
Edit #6, 10:16am: Still no internet. Am trying to be virtuous and finish my tea before departing to the solace of a can of Coke. People’s heads are beginning to look tasty. I probably shouldn’t be grading papers right now.
Edit #7, 10:22 am: Still no internet, but I’ve finished my tea and opened my first Coke. The world is a somewhat brighter place. I expect test scores will go up from here. One test later…Or maybe not. I forgot who Donna has in her class.
Edit #8, 10:44 am: Still no internet, still grading tests. Be afraid, be very afraid.
Edit #9, 11:40 am: Still no internet. Coke all gone. Am considering another can, since I can’t bring anything alcoholic in to school. I’m sure that grading would be better with rum. Would someone please tell me, in what universe do snapdragons look like artemisia? Or persicaria resemble castor beans? Or snapdragons resemble iris? Or cupheas resemble anything in the mallow family? I’m very confused.
Edit #10, 11:51 am: Still no internet. Am starting second Coke. Would someone explain to me where Russian sage resembles dragon’s blood sedum? Must. Not. Beat. Students.
Edit #12, 11:58am: Still no internet. Am 3 swigs into second Coke-and-lime. Can’t understand why this student can’t tell the difference between English ivy and a very low-growing vine with 2” yellow daisy flowers. Or pinks and hens-and-chicks. Must. Not. Beat. Students. Especially when they leave smart-ass comments as answers to the test. (We will, however, leave smart-ass comments back, and count the whole dang thing wrong.)
Edit #13, 12:11 pm: Still no internet. Blessed are the students with neat handwriting, for they are easy to grade (and usually get the right answers anyway).
Edit #14, 12:31 pm: Still no internet. Just committed my one act of tact for the day: JF, one of the instructors here, came in talking about how she’d been playing with one of the online dating things, and had been told there were no matches for her in her hometown. JF commented that she’d known that already. No comment from the polyamorous peanut gallery this morning.
Edit #15, 1:01 pm: Still no internet. Finished my second Coke, and grading quizzes (thank the gods!). The last quiz had a score of 24%, and had more blank spaces than answers. Am considering another Coke after lunch, to help me forget the quizzes. Donna says she’s going to be a crack whore in her next life, and will consider that a step up from her current career in education.
Edit #16, 1:14pm: Eating lunch, sans internet. Am getting a tad twitchy from withdrawal. Have nothing to read but quizzes and some articles about scary Christian Right tactics that I saved last week. Probably not the best things to dwell on, considering.
Edit #17, 1:41 pm: Done with lunch, done reading articles. Still no internet, still twitchy. Am about to give up and go do something productive for a while. I ended up grading quizzes, instead of finishing the watering when Donna got in. Ought to go finish that. **sigh** The door to the office got left open, so now we’re being invaded by students who think they’re funny. I am sooooo not amused. (Not Donna’s class, at least, so I don’t have to deal with a double dose of them, but I also don’t have quiz performances to hold over them.) Grrrr.
Have I mentioned there’s still no internet? The hobbit is extremely cranky.
Edit #18, 3:03pm: Still no internet. Have finished watering the greenhouse, only got 3 cuts from the sharp-edged things today. Still v. cranky from lack of lj and having to water around students. We may have to take drastic measures soon.
Edit #19, 3:34pm: Still no internet. Third cup of tea did nothing to soothe the savage hobbit. Went out and sprayed bugs in greenhouse—killing something helps the hobbit’s mood, but I’m sure that killing something more significant that mealybugs would have yielded greater improvement. Grrrrr.
Edit #20, 4:00pm: Still no internet. While I’m merely jonesing for lj, Donna’s hurting, because she uses various sites as quick references for grading tests, and it’s taking three times as long, having to look things up on paper. Went out and cut up some of the tropicals that just came in from the front porch—that helped the “must kill something” urge a bit. Never thought I’d miss the chainsaw in grounds.
Edit #21, 4:25pm: Yes, we know that campus is still experiencing a “distruption” in internet service. I wonder if the tech support desk realizes there’s a typo in that email they sent out to the entire campus. Am contemplating another Coke. I know, I know, I’m supposed to be cutting back. (Donna says don’t bother, by the way. She says that grading papers will drive you to drink, and since I’ll be generating my own crap to grade next semester, I might as well get used to it. I’m still frowning in her general direction.)
Edit #22, 4:52 pm: Still no internet. I’ve been 18 hrs without, now. By isn’t sympathetic at all (he says, “now you know how my day goes”). **sigh**
Edit #23, 5:32 pm: Yay!!!!! It's finally back!!!! I feel so much better now.
