The lovely [livejournal.com profile] breathofgold posted this on her journal, and I'm passing it on...

Draft Legislation in Indiana:

The Crime of "Unauthorized Reproduction"
New law will require marriage as a legal condition of motherhood
([livejournal.com profile] breathofgold's posting here)

Read, weep, gnash teeth, and contact your congresscritters. And pass this on.

For the moment it's only artificial aids to conception like AI, in-vitro, fertility treatments, etc. But it's clear to me from the sponsor's comments that her aim is to eventually punish any woman who has a child without benefit of marriage. Fortunately, I don't think it can pass, and if it can, it can't survive a challenge (privacy). But it's still freaking disturbing.

It's as disturbing to me that someone thinks this is an appropriate action for the state government.

Shades of The Handmaid's Tale and all that.

Please see either a more recent comment in my journal (in my origional post) from chernobylred or her journal for the same... she got some context on this legislation - doesn't justify the legislation...does give some context though.

I saw that. That circumstance was extremely unfortunate, and yes, there probably ought to be something to prevent that from happening again.

I just can't wrap my head around the idea that someone thought that a bill with that scope was appropriate.
