Various updates
May. 30th, 2011 03:05 pmWe upgraded our phones and switched services this week. Ideally, this will allow us to get rid of the extra line for the computer, and save us a fair chunk of cash each month. At the moment, well.......there's a learning curve.
Have had a couple chats with the owner of the agressive boxer from earlier in the week. He's not a bad guy, just an irresponsible dog owner. I have his phone numbers, and he's actively working on his fence now. He's suggested bringing his dogs down to meet us, so they're less aggressive towards us. That will have to wait until The Miss isn't so afraid of being out in the yard.
Mom said last week that Grandma has started lobbying to get herself a little car, so she can run herself around town. Mom is working hard to discourage this notion, because....yeah.
Moms best friend at work retired this week, and that has Mom trying how soon she can do the same. She's thinking she can hold out for 2 more years.
Have not heard from D since Friday morning, and I'm hoping that it doesn't mean the worst. Last I'd talked to her, she'd just had a call from her sister, because their mom had taken a down-turn and checked herself into the hospital.
We've gotten lots done around the yard this week. By broke up the concrete steps from the front porch, and got the rubble hauled off. He also got the old wooden slats off a pair of cast iron benches that I'd salvaged ages ago, so those can be painted.
The giant, eat-the-world honeysuckle in back has been cut down and cut up. That exposed the lines of peonies that used to be around the bush. I have a notion of planting iris inside those lines, installing a bench, and making a sitting area there. It's shady and pleasant back there.
I installed la dscape fabric along the east side of the herb shed, and planted rhubarb there. Eventually, there will be a path around that corner, and maybe some shrubbery.
Today, By made tomato cages for me (big ones out of chicken wire that are varmit-resistant), and I spread landscape fabric where some of the tomatoes will go. I also got a good start on installing flat(ish) chunks of limestone in a sloped path that tends to get slippery and hazardous when wet. I'm planting wild thyme between the stone, so that path will be fluffy green dotted with rocks, and good traction.
