The Sock Report: started and worked up to the heel on the second orange alpaca sock on Saturday, and am now in the gusset decreases. Go me! And I've got a fair amount of the yarn left...I'm debating either fingerless gloves, or saving it for accents on more indulgent socks later.

The UnSock Report, Rugs: Sunday evening I finished the third of the crocheted rugs I'd started at Laid Back. It's taken up position next to the lamp beside my chair, covering the cord that has to cross the walkway now. I went ahead and used the last of that yarn to start another rug, although I'll need to pull out more yarn in that color set. But later, because I've got a bin of blues and greens that I need to work up first, so it's not sitting out.

The UnSock Report, Knitted Lace: The Orenburg-style scarf was 36" long unstretched when I measured it yesterday evening. That's halfway. I've almost memorized the patterns, so it's going much faster now. I'm really anxious to see this finished...first, because it's lovely already, and second, it's giving me ideas. I ought to have enough of this yarn left over to do another scarf, and there are other neat patterns in Weldon's Practical Needlework that I could work up this way.

The UnSock Report, Other Knitting: I started another shawl project, because I just couldn't help myself. I've had this pile of leftover novelty yarns, some from the vegan fox stoles I did a couple years ago, some from the red scarf I did for Frank last month, all in a pile, shiny and multihued and multitextured. I gave in....the pile is becoming a shawl, nothing fancy, just a triangle in a chevron pattern. I'm using a strand of novelty yarn with a strand of wool from Myrna's stash, and just changing colors when something runs out. It's nice so far, flashy, but nice.

I'm really curious about these crocheted rugs you keep describing. All I can picuter are the braided&coiled rugs that my grandma used to make. Are there pics or patterns anywhere that I could look at?

Not that I've seen; I'm mostly making them up as I go along. They're on my list of things to photograph, when we get a couple more things updated on the machine. Right now, we can't load pics from the digital camera to the computer.

The rugs I've been making do look similar to a braided rug, in that the work spirals out from the center, and the color changes are fairly gradual. But instead of the braid teture, it's single crochet, in three strands of yarn and a big hook (K or L, I think).

I'll try to get a couple patterns written up, and post them when I get pics up. Nothing else, they're a great way to use up piles of leftover acrylic yarns.

Found something close

This (http://home.inreach.com/marthac/mary.html) pattern is similar in texture to what I'm doing, except that my color breaks aren't that regular. On mine, I change out one color at a time, whenever a skein runs out.

Another one

A rectangular rug" (http://crafterscommunity.net/index.php/152), crocheted with strips of fabric and Q hook. Shaping would be the same for yarn, just smaller hook.

Most of the "extra" yarn that I have about is the caron simply soft from making baby afghans (and the NEA, of course) some lion brand homespun, and some *sigh* chenille. Somehow the thought of a rug from made from that recipe is just... luxurious. :D

Oh!! So a really big [insert shape] worked in rounds, starting from a base short row of chains. I made a bunch of those sorts of shapes with one strand of yarn, coaster or small ornament size, when I was just playing with string a while back.

*adding to mental list of potential projects...* :-D
