As of late this afternoon, Sis and Baby are at home (at her insistance, she says). She's not supposed to drive for 2 weeks, and she's really sore in some places, but she's ok.

Baby will go back for checkups in two weeks--he had a heart murmur at birth, and he failed the hearing test, but the doc said both of those are probably related to the trauma of getting him out. Sis said he looked like he was run over by a truck Monday night, but he's better now. Bruises on his head, and one shoulder and arm, and all down his chest. I could hear him crying on the phone, so his lungs work.

Sis has a bunch of staples in her tummy. They didn't do the C-section they'd originally planned in case of an emergency. The doc didn't think it was necessary. (This is a new doc, who I guess didn't believe her first delivery was that bad. She believes now.) By the time it was necessary, Baby's head was out, his shoulders firmly wedged in her pelvis, and they couldn't pull him out or push him back in for surgery. The doc ended up cutting above her pubic bone, enough to get the doc's hand in to work Baby's shoulders out. *shudders*

The doc says she's done this before, but this was the worst case she'd ever seen. Sis says it's creepy, to be laying on the table not able to feel below the waist, and hearing the doctor hit code blue and yelling for more help.

The doc also says she's glad Sis doesn't plan on having more kids, because she (the doc) doesn't think she could go through that again.

They almost didn't do Sis's tubal yesterday, because her hemoglobin count was very very low, but they did, so her navel is sore too. But she's cheerful about that one. Heck, now that it's over, she's cheerful in general. But that could be the super-duper Midol she's doped with.

I'm glad Amy's okay. I'm not so thrilled with her doc. Ranj thinks the doc needs an attitude adjustment.

I'm of mixed mind on this one. I think the doc should have listened more carefully to what Amy's previous delivery was like--and family history (see below)--but the impression I got from Amy was the doc was new to her, and fairly young, and quite surprised by the situation Amy ended up in. At least she was there the whole time, unlike Amy's previous doc.

I di ask Amy why they didn't do the c-section. Amy says the doc thought everything was going well, until the baby's shoulders got stuck ("head squishes, shoulder's don't" Amy says). Then things got bad, very very quickly. Then the doc couldn't get anyone to respond to the code blue (and THAT is what gets my blood up--what kind of a hospital are they running down there??). By the time anyone got in to help, the doc had the baby out and was starting to stitch her back up.

Anyway, she's officially neutered, so she wan't have to go through this again. Thank all the gods that may be listening.

Note on family history--the only reason Mom didn't have problems this bad with Amy & I (and she nearly died in childbirth both times) was that Amy was only 7 lb 4 oz, and I was 6 lbs something. Had Mom had 8 lb babies like Amy's done, we probably wouldn't be having this conversation.

*shrug*

All I think Amy is thinking about right now is that she made it through, and she's not going to do it again.

I will tell her you're thinking of her.
