Dunno much about Heartland, but Heretic Camp was fun. Got to know Fred & Lisette better; they’re more of the Nebraska folks, and come off like bubbas at first, but they’re generous, capable, witty people. And good cooks. We like good cooks.
Heretic Camp was extra mucky from Monday night’s rain when I got there; the crew was beginning to dump bales of peat moss and pine shavings into our “kitchen” area for better footing. It worked very well, and we figured it counts towards that terraforming we’ve been wanting to do. Ashe thought to include one bag of cedar shavings, so our kitchen smelled like incense.
Earth Rising had roped off the area we camp in, because they didn’t want ruts in what little grass is there (our “kitchen” area is on a clay flat—it’s either way too wet, or way too dry), so we had very little competition for our space this year. It also kept random people from walking through our kitchen—I think we only had a two people try to come up and buy food from us this year, rather than the dozen last year. And the Heretic Camp phrase of the week: “Welcome to Heretic Camp, a gated community!”
There was no hot water in the shower house, so I skipped my shower Tues night.
Tuesday was miscellaneous food night; I missed whatever else went on, I was still dazed by the legal mess I’d just escaped from. I don’t think the guys did a fire in the main circle that night.
Wednesday was the “Fair Fowl” night at our camp: pheasant, quail, turkey, and duck, plus veggies. We marinated the quail and grilled those. The ducks were stuffed with apples and oranges and pears and rosemary and thyme, and baked in the fire. The pheasant and turkey were also stuffed and baked. Very good food. Small fire in the main circle, just wood, no pyrotechnics.
Still no hot water, but I was desperate and showered anyway. I did okay until I had my hair completely wet, then stood up to grab the shampoo. You guessed—icy cold wet hair down my back and butt. I would have screamed, if I’d had the breath. That was the fastest I have EVER washed and conditioned my hair.
