She said.....
Mar. 11th, 2004 09:39 pmlet there be tea, and there was tea, and the world was--well, better anyway.
When I got back from rehearsal, By told me he'd talked to my sister. The second of her tests (a second blood serum test) also came back positive for Down's. She's trying to get in to the hospital in Wichita ASAP for amniocentesis, which is the most reliable (and most invasive).
She's already decided, if it is Down's, she's going to abort. She's not sure how she's going to convince her husband, but she told By (rightly so, in my opinion) that she just didn't have the time/energy/resources for a child that needed that level of care.
That's all she knows right now; By said she wasn't chatty at all (unusual for my sister).
Hopefully, Mom is doing better...dunno if Sis has told Mom this yet, but Mom tends to be better with problems if there's a potential solution in place.

Date: 2004-03-12 04:33 am (UTC)I am immensely cheered by the fact that my mom also thinks this is the right decision, that's a big help for Amy.
And according to By, the prospect of another child to take away from his play money has convinced Harry they don't need more kids, and maybe him getting fixed isn't such a bad idea after all.

Date: 2004-03-12 12:42 pm (UTC)I, too, was worried about Mom's reaction, but when she was passing on the news on Tues, Mom said that *she* thought an abortion would be Amy's best option, if it was Down's. I almost fell over; I've never heard Mom say she thought that was a good solution for any reason. (Needless to say, Mom knows nothing about my own experience in that area. Some things, parents aren't meant to know.)
Not sure how helpful I will be when it comes time for Amy to deal with the spousal unit...most of my suggestions involve a large cast-iron skillet and his head.
I think this is a kind of emergency Harry's never had to deal with before: it's nothing he can fix, or bully, or break, and he's panicked (undertandable, but not at all helpful). Couple that with an untreated anxiety disorder --"If I take my pills the Army won't let me play with the big guns anymore" (no, I'm not kidding, he said that) -- and a country-bumpkin macho streak that interfers wth his good sense. Not helpful at all.
