Worse than yesterday
Feb. 12th, 2004 11:25 amI managed to have two fights with D the Annoying this morning, all before 8am. And no, I didn't start either of them.
The first fight, I walked in frst thing this morning and asked our Foreman if he knew anything about the tire tracks in the snow around the open field at the NW corner of campus (I might add, in the same place the PT tend to cruise to goof off in spring and summer). D immediately jumped on the offensive about how he was out there picking up trash--as if there is any fresh trash out there in the field this time of year--and why was it any business of mine. I was so pissed I walked out.
Later, a bit before 8am, Courtney and I were in the breakroom starting on the tree labelling project (long story, and you probly don't want to know), and D walks in and jumps me again, wanting to know what I was doing that I saw him. I just could not get through to the man that I wasn't being accusatory, I just wanted to know who had been out there, and did they have a reason (which he didn't). Finally had to tell the old bastard that I was not answerable to him, and that we were working, so just shut up.
SO, I ended up in Supervisor's office again this morning, giving him an earful about D the Annoying. Supervisor was, last I heard, headed to the Director's office this morning, to see what they could do about this. D is sooo very out of hand, and he's soured the job for everyone else on the crew. It's impossible to work with, or even around him anymore.
I'm half afraid that tomorrow morning will be even uglier, since Foreman will not be here as backup. I am tempted to call in sick tomorrow, just so I don't have to deal with D. Which, as Foreman pointed out, could be used in our favor to get rid of the old coot if I did, but it might get me in trouble for mis-use of sick time. *sigh*
Supervisor said yesterday he'd talk to D this morning, but he didn't. Disappointing, but typical. I know Foreman did, but don't know how much good that'll do.
Foreman did tell me this morning that if D pulls a stunt like today's fights tomorrow morning, I can send him home. And if he doesn't leave, I can call security to take him to his car.

Date: 2004-02-12 03:46 pm (UTC)I will post this afternoon's addition to the story later, but will say that I am sufficiently fed up with the confrontations that I am calling in sick tomorrow, and Supervisor is sufficiently fed up that he is (a) allowing me to do so, and (b) going to come in himself at 6am tomorrow morning just for the priviledge of chewing D a new orifice.

Re: As your EEOC Attorney....
Date: 2004-02-12 07:51 pm (UTC)This is all complicated by the fact that Director is new in his post (started Jan 21 of last year), and has a vastaly different management style, which he apparently will not bend to match HR's decrees. According to the talk I had with Supervisor today, HR says D can be fired, probably ought to be fired. But Director wants to "give him one last chance". Arrrgh.
And yes, for the record, I plan to make a full post tomorrow when I'm rested, about me staying home and why, etc.
Supervisor told me this afternoon that he will going in at 6am tomorrow morning, just so he can summon D, chew him a new orifice, and send D home. Which ought to make matters easier the rest of the week, but I just didn't want to be there for another confrontation this week. I've had enough already.
D's not bringing up any form of age discrimination himself, it's things like "they all hate me", "someone in this room thinks I can's do anything right", "they're all out to get me". (The response to that last among the rest of the staff has become, well, we are now, because you're so hard to deal with.)
The biggest problem is D has forgotten that he is in a part-time position, aimed at student help, and therefore it's a low-man-on-the-totem-pole, gets-all-the-shit-jobs position. He was in management when he retired, and he seems to think that's where he ought to be now.
