I'm going to ask my friends to bear with me this afternoon: I finally got a bunch of things scanned and loaded onto the web, so following this will be a series of photo-posts of the crafty things I've been working on and babbling about.

I got "Simply Socks," I think it was, for Christmas. I admit to finding the patterns daunting - it's the "how to actually make the sock" part that I'm not getting yet, but I have just read through, haven't tried sitting down with needles and yarn and the book and slogging through.

Glad you like the hat! It's a fun pattern - I think mostly because the sideways cables are kind of unexpected. I love that kind of stuff, where it's not quite what you usually see...

Do dive in, the construction of those socks is much easier than it looks. Only tricky parts are handling the colorwork, and it's rarely more than 2 colors per row, and then starting the heel. Hard part about the heel is picking out the "zipper" part (the waste-yarn seam) and picking up the sts to start the heel, the rest is easy. And it's a super-comfy style of sock, even though it's not very fitted and looks a little strange. You end up with a soft cushiony fabric under your foot, and a friend who wears his to cycle in swears they're wind-proof.

They seem to age well, so far--my first pair is two years old, and gets worn and machine washed fairly often. The other pairs I posted (except for the green pair for ranjtheobscure) are at least 6 months old.

I hadn't realized the symbolism of Ranj's socks was quite so...symbolic. That's really sweet, though. :) I hope he likes it too.

Yes, I need pics of your socks. Maybe next time you vist, you could bring or wear them, and I'll toss them on the scanner while you're here?

I'd hoped to be able to do something with that many layers of meaning on your socks, too, but I just couldn't find that kind of symbollic vocabullary in the Greek art, like I did with the traditional carpet patterns. So, you're stuck with merely nicely patterned socks.
