Tired, but productive
Oct. 27th, 2003 08:31 pmCanned 3 batches of apple jelly yesterday--none of which gelled, so they'll be labelled apple syrup, which is okay, because the family members receiveing it was Xmas presents won't know any better, and don't read my journal *grin*
Also canned a smallish batch of "apple kiwi honey"--a recipe out of one of my new books. It's apples, kiwi fruit, and honey, cooked until it's apple-butter consistency. Very tasty stuff, ought to make more while apples are in season. Had I used the cooking apples the recipe called for, I'm sure that flavor would be dominant, it's a tangy fruity honey flavor now. Got 3 pints out of that (and I think I'm going to be greedy and save this stuff for myself!).
Did one large batch of pear butter with added apple juice (to use up the apple puree from the freezer)last night; it behaved very well. Six pints of that.
I have 3 half-pint jars of a diabetic pear butter ready to seal, and a crock-pot full of pear goop simmering and becoming pear butter.
And I still have three, 5-gal buckets of pears left to process. Since the diabetic pear butter made such a small batch, I'll probably do another batch tomorrow. And if I got up and chopped pears after sending By off to work, I could have two or three batches ready to seal by the time he got off work.
Looks like the family's getting preserves for Xmas. Saves me time shopping.
The Sock Report: finished the stripey bit on the leg of the Timber Frame sock, and started on the ribbing while we were running errands today; about 2" of knitting done on that today.
The Unsock Report: The time I'd hoped to spend on the Round Trip sweater got spent canning, getting ready to can, or cleaning up after canning. But I did get a few inches done on the right side/sleeve part, and I hope to get some more done on it tomorrow. Be nice to have it done this week. I really need to go through the pile of knitting-in-progress next to my chair and just pick up each project in turn, and work on them, one at a time, until they're done.
