Dec. 28th, 2010 04:36 pmWell, that story just reinforced my fear of heights, and things like ski lifts. "That story" being the bit on NPR talking about a ski lift in Maine dropping riders to the snow some 30 feet below. Feet, especially mine, belong on the ground.
We made it to Mom's and back for the holiday. The family was reasonably well behaved (the ones that showed up), except for The Bug, who chose not to sleep the whole trip (on an overnight stay, no less). Sis's boys seemed to genuinely like the hand-knit gifts, Mom was thrilled with the sewing machine from Sis and I, and Grandma just seemed happy to be out of the hospital.
The kids made out like bandits this year--clothes, toys, books. By's folks made a doll bed for The Miss, complete with little foam mattress and pillow, eyelet lace bedspread and pillowcase, and two little fleece blankets. And another baby doll--that makes three. And gods forbid her brother touch any of them. By's joking that the folks should have made her a baby doll bunk bed. My sister made each of my kids one of the tied fleece blankets that are so popular now, in colors to fit their personalities and sized to fit small kids' beds. The kids love the blankets.
By's folks got us a new Nikon digital camera. Not sure if it's a hint to send pics more often, or his mom noticed the cracked lens on our old one. It's much appreciated, either way, even if it is smarter than we are. They also gave us books, because they love us. There will be more drooling over the books as we have time to fully digest them.
The centerpiece of our holiday gifts was a red and blue and white quilt in the "Courthouse Steps" pattern, one of the last that Grandma will ever make. There were two alike, one for me and Sis. Grandma put them together the year we moved her to the apartment, and Mom's quilting person finally got them quilted. I want to embroider a panel with that info, and sew it to the back of the quilt, so we'll always remember that.
I got most of my holiday knitting done. Still working on a pair of socks for By, and I still need to get the buttons on his slippers (which means getting them away from him for an hour). And I need to make myself sit down and sew a pile of doll clothes and assemble dolls, so I can distribute those. I've even got a nice pile of printed vintage hankies to make into dresses, just lack the "round to-it".
