General weekend update, and Sock Reports

We were self-indulgent Sat night, and combined our trip to Hobby Lobby for leather odds and ends with a trip to Blockbuster for movies. Heavy Metal, The Italian Job, a Japanese flick called The Returner, and Return of the King. The Returner was pretty cool, a sci-fi, back from the future to fix a disaster before it happens sort of film.

Sunday was the HSA meeting, which we were late for, because we were watching a movie that morning, and started it late. HSA meetings are always an exercise in herding cats. Ended the evening at the Charlesworth's home for dinner and talking. Turns out they were serious about us being godparents for Maia. Scary. I didn't think we were that responsible.

By spent yesterday hard at work on the casket-cases. He's having trouble getting the right angles and bevels cut on the wood sides, and he REALLY wants to have at least one of them done for Friday night. They're difficult enough to make the price prohibitive, but worth the trouble as a show-off piece.

I tried and tried, but couldn't help myself...I started Another Knitting Project this weekend.

The Sock Report: I started Knitty's Very Tall Socks this weekend. Changed somewhat, because I couldn't see broad horizontal stripes being flattering on my short legs, and to use By's excellent suggestion. His idea was that they'd be nice worked in one color (a beige "wheat" shade, in Caron Simply Soft, because I had it), with something up the back to imitate the seam up old-fashioned stockings. I did paired cables, one twisting right, one twisting left, with no sts between them, so it's a gull-wing effect, and no purled sts on the outsides of the cables, so they flow into the fabric. Everyone who's seen it so far likes it, and By & Frank both approved of the effect when it's worn. One sock is done just past the knee, the other is at the ankle, and just a few rows before the heel shaping.

I need to come up with a different garter belt, with sturdy clasps, for these socks. There's a pattern from the summer issue of Knitty for such a thing, knitted in a cotton/lycra yarn, but I'll have to upsize it a bit. And go buy the yarn, which may be out for a while. The clasps I could get fairly cheaply, By & I figured I could use suspender clasps for the heavier fabric. And I bet I've got enough elastic of various types to cobble something functional together in time for the Charlesworth's News Year's Eve bash.

In other sock news, I've got the heel turned on the second aran sandal sock, and need to pick up the stitches for the gussets. So not much left on those. May work on it some this week during my lunch periods.

I also need to start and finish Quickly! a pair of heavy house socks, to send to By's dad for Xmas. Gotta get that done this week.

Haven't started thinking about Xmas gifts yet, except for a couple of people. Need to finish and pack up some things; as it is, By's folks will get their package late this year. I need to put clasps on a couple of beaded bracelets for my sister, we're buying presents for her kids and husband (clothes, usually). We're getting some groceries for my grandmother, and I have no idea what to get Mom. She always says we're not supposed to get her anything, but gee whiz, we stay at her house, eat her food, I feel like we need to do SOMETHING for her. Ah well. Got a little while to think about it.

I need to get pics of a bunch of things, including these socks. I promise a pic of me modelling them, too. (I know you were going to ask!)

Yup.. I can be transparent about these things can't I? ;-) Unfortunately, I'll have to take By's word on how they feel whilst on you (for now )

Well, from the inside, they feel rather like a soft acrylic sweater. Simply Soft is a "soft" acrylic yarn, a bit shiny, and smooth, a little squishy. With a textured cable down the center back, all the way to the bottom of the heel.

I'll be sure to ask him what he thinks of the texture. *wink*
