There and back again, a Tree's tale (long)
Where to start? Argh. I'm still very disorganized. How 'bout in reverse order, just to be different....
anguisetteowner called us at 4:45 this morning; he'd just turned onto Hwy 7 and was headed our way. I don't want to know how fast he was driving. We tucked him into the sofa bed, and I haven't seen him twitch since I got up with By at 6am. I can't tell if that's him snoring, or Baggins.
By has to work today--they have 2 pieces to make (start to finish) today, for delivery tonight. Hopefully, he gets the rest of the week off. *crosses fingers*
The flight east was fine, a bit crowded on the way out, less crowded and quieter on the way back. Good to see By's folks--and good to see their 80-gal hot water heater. Woo hoo! Not often both By & I can wash our hair without a wait in between for the hot water to recharge.
Mostly, it was a quiet trip. We stopped to visit Granny Phillips on the way home from the airport; she didn't recognize By & I. For that matter, we were told she only recognizes By's dad as "that man who messes with my things." Other than that, she's in good health.
Mom P took me to visit the alpaca farm where she buys yarn now. Woo hoo!!! Happy Treeskin. I never did figure out how much the yarn was; she wouldn't let me pay for my own (two skeins of a shaded blue wool for Byron-sox, and a super-soft white alpaca in the same weight). Can't have been too bad, as we left there with an imported Peruvian alpaca shawl, 6 skeins of yarn, and a pattern, and the bill was $97. The shawl was a bit over $40, and I think the pattern was $5, so that puts the yarn around $8 a skein, I guess.
Good loot this year: By got some turtlenecks, and a sweater, and four of the "Boy Mechanic" compilation books that were put out in the 20's or 30's by Popular Mechanics. Some cool stuff in there. I got more alpaca sock yarn, shaded oranges this time, and a worsted weight wool in similar shades, and four skeins of commercial sock yarns, and some odds and ends knitting notions, and a bag of Rainbow Gallery embroidery threads. Plus, By's mom sent her old set of Denise Interchangeable needles home with me, to see if I liked them, and a pair of #2 Addi bamboo circ's, so I could try the two-circ's method of knitting socks. (Tried it a bit this morning; don't think I like it.)
His folks liked our goodies; I'll have to pack and ship the pear butter for them, since I forgot it. His mom really liked the stitch markers, and wore them as a brooch when they took us to the airport yesterday.
The trip to my Mom's was shorter than we'd originally planned. By got home from work late enough in the evening we just weren't willing to drive. So, we left Wed morning instead of last Tues. Played more cards than I care to these days (interfers with my knitting, you know). My nephew is almost hip-high on By, which is scary, since he doesn't turn 5 until end of Feb.
Mom had bought matching shirts (dark red henley, demin overshirt) for everyone this year, to go with the appointment she'd made for us all at the photographer's on Main St. And that was supposed to happen Sat--the day AFTER we landed in Virginia. Woops. Nice shirts, anyway.
The best present was a limestone birdbath my uncle made. Two pieces, about 300 pounds together; basicly a chunk of limestone fencepost set in the ground, with a slab on top, which has a hollow scooped out of the middle. Too cool. I'm going to put it in the mint bed.
I've got to call Mom and get her to send me the tag for the cardigan she gave me--it's just not me. I love the color (shaded rusts and earthy colors), it's a wonderful chenille fabic, but it has a zipper up the front (which I hate in dressy clothing), and it just didn't fit well.
The Sock Report:
classics_cat, you'll be happy to hear that your Greco-Turkish socks are nearly done. I just need to do the heels, weave in ends, and work up some drawstrings.
I started on my "some assembly required" Yule yarn--a pair of toe-up cable sox (pattern from a back issue of Knitnet, when it was still free access). The pattern was written to be worked on two circ's, and By's mom sent a pair of #2 circ's home with me so I could try it, but I don't think I like it. I've done two rounds that way this morning, and I'm worried about developing ladders at either side of the socks. Think I'm going back to my double points.
Oh! By's mom told me something useful--according to her needlework shop-owner friend, when the self-striping yarns don't stripe, you're supposed to add about 4 stitches, or change needles and your gauge. I must try that. So far, I've not gotten those yarns to work. Neat random patterns, but no stripes.
The Unsock Report: Finished the Pi shawl late Tues evening. Still need to weave in ends on that.
I should get back to my cleaning. We'd originally expected
anguisetteowner to be arriving about now, so I'd figured on having three hours to do heavy cleaning this morning before he got here. Oh well. Litterboxes and such don't seem to be bothering him, though I'm being nice and waiting until he wakes to vacuum.
Must remember to call Pet tonight. He left a rather cute message on the machine Friday, saying he couldn't remember when our trip was, and wondered if I was wanting "company". As By put it, "sounds like your pet wants to resume his pet status".
