News we really didn't want to hear.....

...but, we've been expecting it for a year or so.

Grandpa Phillips was put in the hospital for pneumonia last month. They've moved him from the hospital, to the nursing home part of the assisted living facility the folks are in, and now to hospice care.

By's folks told us Thursday night that they don't expect him to last but a couple of weeks. (And my boss, who's wife is a nurse, says the hospice people are usually accurate about such things.) So.

As I said, it's not unexpected; Grandpa is 95, and has been getting sicker and more fragile the last few years. But as By said, "some people, you think will only get older, and never stop living."

I don't know yet if we'll be going to Virginia (where By's parents and the folks live now) for the funeral, or up to Star Lake, NY (that's where the family is from). I didn't talk to By's folks, and I haven't wanted to upset him more by asking. Not that it matters a lot; we'll go where they send us.

I'd almost rather his parents had waited, and not told us ahead of time. They were trying to be practical, I know. But it's cast a shadow over everything this week. And I spend too much time working by myself, with too much time to think & get depressed.
